Successfully concluded investment in the renovation of the long-life production plant
Monday 11. June, 2012

Ljubljanske mlekarne has successfully concluded the investment in the renovation of the long-life product production plant in the total amount of € 14m. The key trademark of long-life products produced in this plant is Alpsko mleko which this year celebrates its 45 anniversary.

Through the development of new products the Ljubljanske mlekarne has proven many times to be a modern company able to satisfy expectations of their customers. Within the boundaries of Slovenia the company represents the leading dairy company with the largest market share in the field of long-life milk supply despite a very strong internal and external competition. The product group of long-life milk and cream represents strategically important part of the production – sales programme of the Ljubljanske mlekarne which exports 54 % of the long-life milk to foreign markets. Long-life milk represents 65 % share of the total sales volume of the company, whereas the Alpsko mleko trademark represents 30 % of the total sales volume. These are just some of the important reasons which lead the company to decide and invest in the plant renovation project. This project was the biggest investment Ljubljanske mlekarne carried out in the last decade and was based on a complete technological renovation and automation of the long-life milk and other long-life product production procedure, and at the same time lead to greater production capacities.

»The long-life product production plant was built in 1979 – 33 years ago. In past years we actually updated our technology and followed the development of long-life product production process, but never concluded such a thorough renovation as was performed with this project. The key starting points set in the renovation project were to replace and update the equipment, to increase the production capacities and product quality and to lower the production costs and power consumption. The planning of the renovation started two years ago and I am pleased to say that it also allowed us to renew the packaging and graphic design of our key trademark Alpsko mleko. This happened exactly on the 45th birthday of Alpsko mleko which we celebrate this year« said Cvetana Rijavec, the president of the management board of Ljubljanske mlekarne.

The investment project of renovation of the long-life product production plant referred to three parts: process part where long-life products are produced, filling-packaging part and the robotized palletizing and transport logistics system.

The process part was introduced with a new technology of cold milk separation which represents a novelty in the dairy industry. The process itself is characterized by the technological procedure of milk preparation or standardization at temperatures lower than 8 ºC. The system is based on energy rationalization of the consumption of energy products and the resulting financial efficiency and flexibility of the milk processing process itself. With the new preparation technology, Ljubljanske mlekarne standardises the milk at 4 ºC which results in lower consumption of water, steam, electricity and cleaning agents which also means an environmentally friendlier operation and achievement of sustainable objectives of the company. »With the carefully selected new equipment and with some of the machinery, additionally finished with the help of our suppliers in order to use the energy in a more efficient way, along with the integrated system of exploitation of waste heat from sterilizers, the company now saves 15 MW of heat daily. The company uses this heat to clean its technological facilities in the whole dairy « added Sašo Ferjančič, the renovation project manager.

The long-life product production plant was equipped with four new storage tanks (each with the capacity of 100.000 l), two sterilizers, CIP system, four new filling and packaging lines and the complete robotized palletizing system. The plant is now equipped with seven filling and packaging lines and the production capacity increased for 40 %. The facility where the entire process takes place was thoroughly renovated with new industrial epoxy flooring, new installations and air conditioning.

»We started the project in the spring of 2010 when we started planning and designing. Later on we continued with the selection of equipment and started with the construction works in March of the last year. The started renovation of the long-life product production plant presented such a large-scale project that one could compare it to planning and constructing a middle-sized dairy according to the Slovenian circumstances. The renovation took place in three phases as we maintained the production of long-life products at 100 % throughout the renovation period. The renovation involved the cooperation with 30 different companies and business partners and approximately 50 persons worked daily on the construction site. The project group of Ljubljanske mlekarne counted 10 members, but such a large-scale project demanded the cooperation of almost all of our co-operators where each of them added their own part to the successful conclusion of the project« Sašo Ferjančič, head of technical services and the renovation project manager, commented on the renovation of the plant.

Out of more than 100 entries from 25 countries grouped in 14 categories, the Mu Vita brand by Ljubljanske mlekarne, which is synonym for light, healthy products with less fat and sugar, was presented a special recognition award in the category of Best Newcomer Brand of Business, while the Mu Vita spread and butter won in the category of Best New Butter or Spread.

For the second time the Dairy Innovation magazine and the International Dairy Federation presented the innovation awards for products, brand names, and promotional and socially responsible actions in the dairy industry. Once again, the panel awarded those brands and businesses which reflect the development and innovation of the dairy industry, and which Ljubljanske mlekarne have also contributed shaping.

The Mu Vita brand means the extension of the MU brand, a line of basic fresh dairy products, in the segment of the modern healthy diet. “The modern consumer is striving for a healthier lifestyle; this is why the market of dairy products has seen great and fast changes in the last years. This is also followed by innovations in the dairy industry, which are an important development driving force when introducing novelties to the market of dairy products. The consumer always expects new benefits from products with various features which we at Ljubljanske mlekarne presented, among other things, in the Mu Vita line of light, healthy products with less fat,” explains Milica Dvoraček, Managing Director at Ljubljanske mlekarne.

The MU Vita products, which beside spreads and butter also include beverages, were recognized as an innovative dairy product and were awarded the first place among international competition in the category of Best New Butter or Spread.  The Mu Vita light spread contains 60% less fat, while the sunflower seed light spread has 50% less fat. Both spreads are enriched with Omega 3 fatty acids which promote cardiovascular health and help reducing blood cholesterol levels. The MU Vita product line also includes a light butter with 50% less fat.

The main characteristics of the Mu Vita products are also reflected in the visual image of the brand, which is pervaded by a light blue colour bringing to mind key characteristics, i.e. light, healthy products with less fat and less sugar, and as such represents the answer to an increasingly more important trend: the care for the health and vitality of ourselves and our families.  The brand, launched by Ljubljanske mlekarne at the end of last year, received a special commendation in the category of Best Newcomer Brand of Business.

Ljubljanske Mlekarne ended 2009 with profit
Friday 18. June, 2010

At the today\'s 15th regular general meeting of Ljubljanska mlekarne d.d., where 71.60 % of the capital was present, the annual report for 2009 was reviewed, and a decision on the use of profit for appropriation for the year 2009 was adopted. Among other things, a proposal of amendments and modifications of the company statute was discussed at the meeting.

Initially, the President of the Management Board and General Manager, Cvetana Rijavec, briefly presented the performance of the company in the year 2009. Among other things she said the following: “We have an interesting and difficult year behind us, which despite everything went quite differently to what we had planned. At the beginning of 2009, the global financial crisis showed the worst of it. The crisis reflected itself in the credit crunch, which partially affected also Ljubljanske mlekarne, as we had to change the investment plans. The consequences of the financial crisis also affected the sale of our products. On top of this, the crisis on the European diary market appeared, when we were overnight faced with surpluses of milk and dairy products on the global market, which ended in the offer of milk and diary products at historic low prices also on our market. To keep the consumers in the crisis is that more important, and this is also one of the reasons why at Ljubljanske mlekarne we increased investments in communication with them in 2009. We completed investment in the plastic bottle filling technology and launched new, innovative weight-loss products within the Ego Slim&Vital brand. With the Smuthie we realized healthy products which contain only yogurt and fruit, and are intended for all generations brand. Furthermore, we also launched a group of lactose-free products to the market. All these last year’s activities helped us make clear steps towards stability assurance also in the future. The new products also brought nice results on the market and turned the trends of the sale of these products upwards.”

According to the audited results of business operation for the year 2009, the operating revenue totaled € 146.9 million, and net profit of the business year amounted to € 5.8 million. The general meeting adopted a decision to appropriate the balance sheet as at December 31, 2009 totaling € 5,782,231.27 to a part of the profit amounting to € 652,921.95, which will be appropriated to shareholders in the form of dividends, and the remaining part for other profit reserves. Gross dividend per share amounts to € 0.15 per share. The company will pay out the dividends within, but not later than, 90 days from the date of the adoption of decision at the meeting. The persons liable for the payment of dividends are all shareholders who were entered in the shareholders’ register kept by KDD on the date of the general meeting.

At the general meeting, amendments and modifications of the statute of the company Ljubljanske mlekarne, which were proposed by the Management and the Supervisory Board, were adopted. Based on the Act Amending the Companies Act (ZGD-1C), which entered into force on June 20, 2009, but at the same time set forth that individual Articles start being used on September 1, 2009, companies are bound to harmonize their statutes by September 1, 2010. The major changes of ZGD-1 are in the section referring to the call of the general meeting and in line with this also the amendments and modifications of the statute of the company Ljubljanske mlekarne.

At the general meeting, the decision to discharge the Management and members of the Supervisory Board for the year 2009 was adopted. The general meeting confirmed the proposal of the Supervisory Board to appoint KPMG from Ljubljana for an authorized audit company.

Ljubljanske Mlekarne are a partner of the GreenLight programme
Wednesday 9. July, 2008

In June 2008, the company Ljubljanske mlekarne became a partner of the European programme GreenLight, which was founded by the European Commission. The GreenLight programme is a voluntary initiative for prevention of pollution, which encourages users of electrical power in non-residential sector to invest in an energy-efficient lighting.

Ljubljanske mlekarne committed to mark the 50th anniversary of the first ice-cream on a stick Lučka (a small light) with a socially responsible action Varčujmo z lučkami (Saving with Lights), and thus in 2008 save on energy and lower the light pollution. The participation in the GreenLight programme binds them to decrease the use of electric energy intended for lighting and, as a consequence, lower the harmful emissions and curb the global warming. The aim of the programme is also to improve the working conditions by lowering the energy costs.
The GreenLight programme binds Ljubljanske mlekarne to lower the total lighting energy amount for at least 30 % in at least 50 % of its existing spaces that they own or lease long-term. Only those premises are eligible, where the investment is cost-effective. In new spaces the programme partner must choose such devices, so there is no alternative installation, which would be equivalent or would exceed the quality of lighting, provided by the chosen installation, and it would use less energy, and represent an additional profitable investment. The company must carry out all the upgrades within five years from joining the programme, and issue a report on its progress every year.
Ljubljanske mlekarne began its activities focused toward improvement of energy usage in December 2007, when in the General Distribution Centre in Ljubljana they changed 300 light bulbs with new, energy-efficient light bulbs, which represents the annual power saving of almost 121,000 kilowatt hours. The change of light bulbs in the mentioned premises represents a 40 % power cut in electric power consumption on these premises, which also brings savings in annual cost of electric power, as well as the maintenance costs. This also brought a cut in power cost of cooling compressors in the storage area, because the energy-efficient light bulbs radiate less heat, which is especially important during the summer months, which are the energy usage peak. For an increased efficiency of power usage on the premises of the General Distribution Centre they also installed motion detectors, which turn the lights on and off.
The motors, which represent one of the more demanding power consumers in the company Ljubljanske mlekarne, were equipped with frequency transformers, which also contribute to the cut in electric power usage.
In the future, the company Ljubljanske mlekarne intends to change the ordinary light bulbs with the energy-efficient light bulbs in its office building in Ljubljana, in the production units in Kočevje and Maribor, and in the unit for production of sterile milk in Ljubljana. The energy-efficient light bulbs represent 40 % savings in energy in spite of a substantial initial investment.

The GreenLight programme was launched in 2000 and is supported by the European Commission, the Directorate General for Energy and Transport. For more information about the programme visit www.eu-greenlight.org

We chose the winners of the competition “Milk is good and healthy”
Tuesday 20. November, 2007

We chose two best works of the fine arts competition “Milk is good and healthy”, which was prepared for Slovenian elementary school children in the framework of celebrating 40 years of the Alpine milk.

In the framework of this competition, we received over four hundred contributions of the elementary schools involved, whereby schools themselves had to perform a selection and consequently send only one drawing, representing every age group. The commission, consisting of the president of the jury Nuša Lapajne – academic painter, Tina Žurbi – graphic designer and Renata Lovrak – head of the corporative communications, amongst the received contributions chose two drawings as the first prize winners:

The winning drawing of the age group from 1st to 4th grade:
Miha Šprah – Primožič
1st grade of the OŠ Juričevega Drejčka, Ravne na Koroškem
Mentor: Milena Šrot

The winning drawing of the age group from 5th to 9th grade:
Luka Ivartnik
9th grade of the OŠ Dob
Mentor: Marija Škorjanc

»The jury was convinced by the both winning drawings; in the younger category this is the drawing of the six year-old, who represented a cow. The drawing is very simple, linear, the background is non-specified, and the animal figure is represented in a sincere, childishly playful and vivid manner. The dark powerful drawing has a contrasting effect and the composition is balanced as well, which gives the impression of an independent and integrated totality. In the older category we chose a drawing of the 9th grade pupil, which came as a surprise by manifesting an exceptional knowledge of the drawing space and mastery of the composition, as well as with the harmonic selection of colors and interestingly expressed theme,” commented the selection Nuša Lapajne, the president of the commission and an academic painter.

“We are extremely content with the exceptional response of elementary schools and pupils. The drawing competition was prepared in the framework of celebrating the 40th birthday of our most important trade mark Alpsko mleko, and the packing of the latter will be decorated by the two works, winning the first prize in the beginning of the following year” said Cvetana Rijavec, president of the Ljubljanske mlekarne management.

At the 40th anniversary of the Alpine milk its sales increase again
Tuesday 6. November, 2007

At the 40th anniversary of the Alpine milk, the strongest brand of Ljubljanske mlekarne, its sales are gaining strength. In spite of some major turning points, like the downfall of former Yugoslavia, accession of Slovenia to the European Union and introduction of retailer's own brands, the brand remains among the most recognisable in the Slovene market and markets of the South-eastern Europe.

There would be no long life Alpine milk without good packaging. Tetra Pak packaging, manufactured by the company Tetra Pak, has been with the Alpine milk for 40 years. Lars Holmquist, General Manager of Tetra Pak Adria stated that: “Ljubljanske mlekarne is one of the key partners of Tetra Pak in this part of Europe. In 1966 we supplied Ljubljanske mlekarne with the first filling machine for the Tetra Pak packaging, which today represents a revolutionary technology for retaining long shelf-life of foodstuffs. We can say that it beats tins and microwave ovens. Aseptic technology and packaging represent the most important achievement in this field in the 20th century. Ljubljanske mlekarne is also the leader in the field of innovation and development and therefore a very important partner in developing Tetra Pak Group products. They were also the first in Europe who, at the end of 1990s, introduced a new Tetra Pak system with special closure.”

Ljubljanske mlekarne export 20 % of their production of Alpine milk; the key countries are the countries of the former Yugoslavia, especially Kosovo. In this year Ljubljanske mlekarne is especially proud that their milk was collected almost entirely in Slovenia, and that they achieved positive business results in the last six months.

Tuesday 23. October, 2007

The Alpine milk, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, got its first web site at www.alpskomleko.si. The milk which has left such a strong mark with its image and flavour is even now among the most recognisable market brands in the South-eastern Europe, will at its jubilee organise an online game where you can with a bit of luck catch the lively milk lovers into a Tetra Pak, and with a bit more luck you can win great prizes.

The online Alpine milk game can with a bit of luck fill up more than half of the yearly supply of milk of the lucky winner and lover of the Alpine milk, who uses 73.4 litres per year, according to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia. Until the end of the year, luck will seek out new winners every two weeks, and once a month later on. A lucky hand will draw out new owners of shakers for milk cocktails, attractive T-shirts and sports bags on 9 November.

On www.alpskomleko.si you can also find information about why it is important to drink milk. You probably know that sleep is better with a glass of milk before bed, but did you know that milk helps balance the amount of fluid in the body, that it helps us keep our ideal body weight and have younger looking skin? The Good to Know section will surprise you with other important information about the benefits of milk.
The Alpine milk, which we have been selling in the Tetra Pak packaging since 1967, is at its 40th birthday accompanied by a big family: Alpine milk with 3.5 % milk fat, Alpine milk with 1.6 % milk fat, and Alpine milk with 0.5 % milk fat and products with functional additives: calcium, added Q10 Vital+ coenzyme.
The lovers of Alpine milk history in the Do You Remember section remember their youth through important events. Did you know that the Alpine milk is celebrating its 40th anniversary, the same as the Alan Ford comic books? And that on the same year that Ljubljanske mlekarne filled the billionth litre of Alpine milk the successful Google was established?
Milk is an essential ingredient in the kitchen. Recipes for milk cocktails were prepared by barman Emil in cooperation with Ljubljanske mlekarne, who has proved himself in the reality show Bar II. The gourmet masterpieces with milk can also be published on web site www.alpskomleko.si.

The web site of Ljubljanske mlekarne also got a new look and new address www.l-m.si, where all the information about the products and offer of Ljubljanske mlekarne is available, with corporate news and information for food preparation industry and presentation of affiliated companies.

Art competition at the 40th anniversary of alpine milk titled “Milk is good and healthy”
Friday 19. October, 2007

As a part of celebrations at the 40th anniversary of the Alpine milk Ljubljanske mlekarne organised an art competition titled “Milk is Good and Healthy” for young painters.

We decided to create a more exciting look of the Alpine milk packaging, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2007, with the help of creativity of younger generations and their ideas about milk. We are aware of importance of drinking milk among the young, especially during growing up. For this purpose Ljubljanske mlekarne organised an art competition for young artists titled “Milk is Good and Healthy”. The aim of the competition is to encourage young artistic expression and thinking about milk; the theme for package drawing was MILK in its widest sense.

We invited almost 400 Slovene schools to participate. The students compete in two age groups: the 1st group from the 1st to 4th grades of elementary school, and the 2nd group from the 5th to 8th/9th grades of elementary school. Among all the works received until 20th October, a panel of experts will select two winning drawings (one from each age group), which Ljubljanske mlekarne will print on a limited edition of the Alpine milk 3.5 % 1 litre packages. Of course, first three places in every age group will be awarded.

The selected and awarded drawings will be exhibited in the City Museum of Ljubljana as a part of the Month of Design. The opening of the exhibition and announcement of winners will be held on Friday 16 November 2007, at 20:00 hours. The exhibition will be open until 1 December 2007.

The competition results will be published on 19 November at the 40th anniversary of the Alpine milk on the web page www.alpskomleko.si.
